Opportunities for Formation of Digital Competencies in Preschool and Primary School Children – Trends Based on National Survey

Abstract: The article presents an analysis of the results of the survey conducted by the author among students up to 11 years of age on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. Approximately 600 children aged 9 to 11 years were interviewed, with 494 pupils in the fourth grade. The survey was conducted in 13 Bulgarian cities by selecting a capital, a very large cities (Bourgas, Varna), a large city (Ruse, Haskovo), medium-sized towns (Pazardzhik, Shumen, Blagoevgrad, Razgrad), small towns (Etropole, Parvomai, Berkovitsa) and very small town (Bozhurishte) – the random sample was based on National Statistical Institute data of 31.12.2017 for the number of population in the cities in Bulgaria.

The survey is part of Work Package 3 „Relationship between reading and digital literacy“ to the „Digital competencies and Media  education at preschool and primary school age (2016-2019)“ DN05 / 8-2016 headed by Prof. Dr. Rumyana Papancheva.This article will show the main trends that can be drawn in terms of students’ attitudes and self-estimation towards their own digital competencies and their usage of digital technologies. The focus of the study is on the opportunities offered by the usage of digital technologies for the education of children and their development.
