STEM INTEGRATION IN PRIMARY EDUCATION THROUGH THE STUDY OT THE LOCAL AREA: THE TOWN OF GOTSE DELCHEV – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE IN AN EDUCATIONAL CONTEXT

Abstract: This article presents a pedagogical practice for STEM integration in the initial stage of primary education through the study of the native land. The implemented STEM lesson was conducted with the 3rd grade students at the First Primary School “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”, Gotse Delchev and is on the topic “Gotse Delchev City – Past, Present and Future”. The choice of the topic is dictated by the desire to combine the cognitive content related to the history and development of the city with the formation of civic identity and responsibility in students. By studying the past, understanding the present and designing the future, a comprehensive educational framework is created that encourages thinking and a creative attitude in third graders. At the center of the lesson is a real question – how does the city develop over time and what responsibilities do people have in this process. This allows students to look for connections, analyze information and draw conclusions. The main subjects covered in the lesson are „Man and Society“, „Bulgarian Language and Literature“, „Mathematics“ and „Music“. Various pedagogical approaches are used, such as inquiry-based learning, project-based approach and cooperative learning.
