BEES – THE LITTLE GUARDIANS OF THE WORLD – AN INTERDISCIPLINARY LESSON IN EXTRACURRICULAR INTEREST ACTIVITIES – 3RD GRADE

Abstract: “Bees – the Little Guardians of the World“ is an interdisciplinary lesson conducted within extracurricular interest activities in the third grade as part of the project “Sustainable Future.“ The main pedagogical objective of the lesson is to develop students’ knowledge about the importance of bees for ecological balance, biodiversity, and sustainable development, as well as to foster a responsible attitude toward environmental protection. The lesson integrates educational content from Bulgarian Language and Literature, Man and Nature, Technologies and Entrepreneurship, and Mathematics. Through the application of interactive methods and approaches – discussion, demonstration, observation, and the “learning by doing“ method – students’ cognitive activity, critical thinking, and creativity are encouraged and developed. A significant focus of the lesson is the practical creative activity in which students create a model bee and formulate a personal commitment related to protecting bees and the environment. Special importance is also given to the visual demonstration experiment through which students observe how pollen sticks to the “legs“ of the bee. This practical visualization supports students’ understanding of the pollination process and its importance for the life of plants, animals, and humans. The participation of a guest lecturer – an experienced beekeeper – contributes to increasing students’ motivation and deepening their knowledge through the presentation of beekeeping tools, bee products, and interesting facts about the life of bees. The implemented activities support the development of environmental awareness, social responsibility, and sustainable values among students in primary education.
