HEART JOURNEY – A STREAM LESSON FOR SECOND GRADE

Abstract: This lesson plan presents an interdisciplinary STREAM lesson titled “Heart Journey,“ conducted with second-grade students and designed to build knowledge, skills, and values by integrating content from Bulgarian language and literature, mathematics, natural sciences, visual arts, technology and entrepreneurship, music, and extracurricular activities. At the centre of the pedagogical interaction is the heart—both as a biological organ and as a moral symbol of kindness, empathy, and humanity. The project emphasizes the application of the STREAM approach as an effective model for active learning through experience, experimentation, creative thinking, and teamwork. Through a variety of educational activities – reading comprehension, STEM experiments, engineering challenges, math problems, discussions, and music and art activities – students develop key competencies related to critical thinking, communication, emotional intelligence, and social interaction. A particular strength of the lesson lies in the skillful combination of scientific knowledge with artistic expression and practical activities, which creates conditions for sustainable learning and high motivation. The methodological concept demonstrates the potential of modern elementary education to foster not only subject-specific knowledge but also a value system focused on a healthy lifestyle, cooperation, and personal development. The STREAM lesson „Heart Journey“ is establishing itself as an innovative pedagogical model for integrated learning in early childhood education.
