DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING IN BULGARIAN LANGUAGE CLASSES THROUGH A RESEARCH APPROACH

Abstract: The report examines the possibilities of the research approach for increasing the engagement and cognitive activity of students in Bulgarian language and literature classes in the 5th grade. The relevance of the topic is justified by the changed needs of modern students who have grown up in a digital environment, as well as by the results of national and international studies that show deficits in functional literacy. The theoretical basis of research-based learning, based on the constructivist model, in which students build knowledge through observation, comparison, analysis and formulation of hypotheses, is presented. Its advantages are analyzed – deeper acquisition of language knowledge, development of critical thinking, communicative and social skills, as well as increased internal motivation. The main challenges related to limited learning time, the risk of cognitive overload and the need for a change in the role of the teacher are also examined. A practical model of a 40-minute research lesson on the topic of the sacraments is presented, which goes through the stages of linguistic provocation, research, conceptualization and reflection. The conclusion emphasizes that the research approach turns students into active participants in learning, contributes to the building of lasting knowledge and functional literacy, and offers an effective strategy for modernizing Bulgarian language teaching.
