Abstract: Raising a child with a disability is associated with significant changes in family functioning and requires parents to adapt to new roles and responsibilities. In addition to the increased demands related to caring for their child, parents often face emotional, social, and psychological challenges that affect their quality of life. In their efforts to meet the child’s specific needs, they frequently neglect their own, which may lead to chronic stress, emotional and psychological exhaustion, and social isolation. In this context, psychosocial support plays an important role within the system of family care by facilitating adaptation and helping parents cope with ongoing stress. This paper examines the nature and role of psychosocial support through an analysis of theoretical concepts, models, and approaches to working with families of children with disabilities. Based on this analysis, key components of support are identified and opportunities for their integration into a conceptual framework focused on parents’ needs are outlined.
