STUDY OF THE LEVEL OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE USE AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE IN AN EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

Abstract: The present study aims to establish the level of AI use among Bulgarian students aged 18 to 35 in 2026. For the purposes of the study, a questionnaire was developed including 8 items. For each item, the participants expressed their degree of agreement through a five-point Likert scale. The levels of use were determined on the basis of the mean value of all items through an interpretive scale. The questionnaire was distributed among students from Burgas Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov State University, Burgas Free University, Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv, Konstantin Preslavsky University of Shumen and New Bulgarian University. A total of 304 students took part in the study. The data show that artificial intelligence already has a stable place in students’ academic and everyday practice. It is most often used for searching for information, obtaining additional explanations and supporting academic preparation. The use of AI as a means of avoiding effort is less strongly expressed, which shows that students rather perceive it as a helping resource than as a substitute for their own activity.The moderate level of AI use is dominant in all age groups and in both status groups. Age and current status influence not so much whether AI is used, but rather the way and the intensity of its use. The results confirm the understandings discussed in the theoretical part of the study about artificial intelligence as a technology that is gradually entering different spheres of human activity.
