FORMATION OF COMPETENCIES THROUGH PROJECT-BASED TRAINING

Abstract: In recent years, changes in nature, technology and life have been happening at a rapid pace. This leads to changes in the education of students. The teaching methods used years ago should be replaced with such, that allow the modern student to adapt faster and easier. The goal is to develop and use competencies which provide students with good realization both at school and in life and to prepare and motivate them for lifelong learning. Into the report, we present the possibilities for project-based learning as a way to form competencies, such as critical thinking and problem solving; communication skills; creativity and innovation; organizational skills; technological literacy; social skills; responsibility and self-discipline. I share insights about a project that has been tested in my own pedagogical practice – „Noise, air and traffic – what do we breathe at school?“. In it, I show how the acquired knowledge from several subjects can be used and applied in practical tasks, using the principle of project-based learning. The used methods and techniques are designed in a way to help consolidate the acquired knowledge and skills; make interdisciplinary connections and form key competencies needed by modern students. Learning through projects not only helps students learn faster, but improves the quality of ed- ucation and provides longer lasting practical knowledge and skills.
