Abstract: Autism is a developmental disorder that affects a child’s ability to communicate and engage with the surrounding environment. It typically manifests in early childhood—before the age of three—and is diag- nosed based on behavioural characteristics that range in severity from mild to profound. The manifestations of autism are diverse in both form and intensity, with observed differences in how they present in girls and boys. In some cases, challenges may arise related to perception and cognitive development, including areas of intellec- tual functioning. Early identification of signs is critical for effective intervention, which can begin before the age of two when assessed by qualified specialists.
Recent advances in technology offer new opportunities for supporting children with severe forms of autism, including non-verbal individuals. Assistive technologies—such as tablets, computers, and mobile devices with specialised applications—facilitate the performance of communicative and cognitive tasks and contribute to im- proved functional abilities and overall quality of life.
