Abstract: This article presents an original approach to the formal modeling of Bulgarian embroidery (shevitsa) as a distinctive element of national folklore, with applications in education and cognitive development. The study examines the challenges of representing the symbolic, geometric and semantic complexity of embroidery patterns by developing a structured formal model. The proposed model integrates knowledge representation techniques, including ontological design, pattern recognition and symbolic logic, to capture the meanings, functions and cultural contexts embedded in embroidery motifs. The author applies a hybrid methodology combining formal modeling and digital technologies to build a knowledge base that supports both cultural heritage preservation and innovative educational practices. The model allows for the development of interactive learning resources that promote interdisciplinary education by connecting folklore, mathematics, art and informatics. The proposed model is being developed as part of the „Digital Bulgaria in Prolog“ initiative, part of the International Prolog Education group. The proposed solution contributes to the development of innovative pedagogical approaches for teaching cultural heritage by improving students’ cognitive engagement through structured exploration of traditional embroidery patterns in a digital environment.
Keywords: formal modeling, Bulgarian embroidery, knowledge representation, educational innovation, cultural heritage.
