THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS, PEDAGOGICAL DIMENSIONS, AND DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING

Abstract: Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) has gained global recognition over the past two decades as an essential part of education. The theoretical foundations of SEL draw on developmental psychology, emotional intelligence, and social learning theories. A central framework in this field is the CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), established in 1994 by researchers and educators aiming to unify and promote evidence-based SEL practices in education. CASEL introduced a widely adopted framework comprising five core competencies and continues to support research-based practices for integrating SEL into schools. In Europe and beyond, various initiatives, including the European Network for Social and Emotional Competence (ENSEC), the World Health Organization’s Global School Health Initiative, the Health Promoting Schools (HPS) framework, the EU-SELF project, the OECD’s Study on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES), and the policy recommendations of NESET, reflect a growing commitment to integrating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into national education systems. These efforts highlight the importance of culturally responsive practices, early intervention, and collaboration among educators, students, and families. European frameworks increasingly advocate for SEL to be a structured and cross-curricular component of national education policies.
