BASIC SKILLS AND COMPETENCES OF A DRAMA TEACHER IN THE CONTEXT OF EUROPEAN PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Abstract: „Drama teacher“ is a profession that is recognized in many European educational practices and validated in the European Classification of Skills, Competencies and Occupations – ESCO. In Bulgaria, the concept of drama teacher is still unclear in terms of its role in the education system and the specific competences and training for people who want to qualify or retrain as drama teachers. This paper will analyse the skills and competences from European practices that a „drama teacher“ should have to participate fully and actively in the educational process of drama and theatre in schools. To this end, two studies from Icelandic and English sources will be used to analyse the role of the drama teacher in the classroom. It will critically assess the challenges of establishing „drama teacher“ as a profession in the Bulgarian education system as well, and how to support its establishment as an important profession in the integrated European labour market.
