Abstract: ‘The Mother Language’ is an interdisciplinary lesson that combines knowledge of the Bulgarian language and literature studied in primary and lower secondary education. The aim of this lesson is to help students understand the importance of preserving native words through the analysis of the lexical system of the Bulgarian language, explaining and discussing its characteristic features and terms. The lexical diversity of the Bulgarian language is presented. Students’ attention is directed to a specific date (February 21 – International Mother Language Day) and the day we commemorate. A discussion is conducted on what a mother language is and how important this language is. After thorough preliminary preparation, students demonstrate knowledge in different areas of the lexical system of the Bulgarian language. Third graders take on the role of linguists by discovering synonyms, related words, and synonyms in unfamiliar texts. A transition is made to loanwords and foreign words in the Bulgarian language, as well as to native words. The meaning of the new concepts is explained and a task is assigned. Students’ skills for working with texts are enriched. Emotional intelligence, skills for expressing opinions, and argumentation are also enhanced. The lesson develops skills for working with texts and conducting research.
