SOME ASPECTS RELATED TO THE FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS’ GRAPHIC SKILLS IN PHYSICS EDUCATION

Abstract: The results of a diagnostic study aimed to evaluate the graphic skills of 9th grade students are presented. The study was conducted with 139 students. The evaluated graphic skills are for recognition and construction of a physical graph as well as extracting information from a previously one. A physical graph represents a functional relationship between physical quantities. Based on the results of the study the following conclusions were drawn. Students have sufficiently mastered the skills to recognize physical graphs and to construct said graphs. The skill of extracting information from physical graphs is inadequately mastered. We suggest a graphic activity model with the learning objective of forming and developing students , graphic skills. This model is comprised of structural elements of basic graphic skills such as recognition construction and analysis of physical graphs. The ability to analyze a graph includes following aspects: determination of the numerical values of physical quantities present in the graph, verbal description and explanation of a physical process or movement, determination of a formula corresponding to a graphically presented relationship.
