INCREASING THE STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION FOR READING BY ENGAGING THEIR SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE – READING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM DURING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LESSON

Abstract: The article presents a new way of engaging students from different schools ages and interest in active meaningful reading combined with an attempt to further develop social competence. Modern teaching methods include more and more electronic means that aim to match the interests of the internet born students and the new environment at home and at school. All this does not help develop social intelligence. The goal of this initiative is to stimulate all senses, to provoke thinking, to engage different skills – reading, listening, writing and to develop social skills. The traditional environment – the classroom, in this case is replaced with outdoor activities centred around reading, which is a basic skill, a key to improving all other competencies. Students from different age groups (eighth and fifth grade), with different interests (languages and music) and different abilities participate actively in achieving the goals of their groups. Through the reading task cognitive thinking is stimulated. Working in groups expands the students’ social intelligence,
which includes the individual’s understanding of a particular situation and that person’s interaction with other people. The eighth-grade students use compensatory methods to engage and hold the attention of the younger students, incorporating compensatory skills – artistic reading, voice changing. The younger students put effort in understanding the text and guessing where it comes from. Later they show their gratitude by giving an improvised classical music concert in the open space of the schoolyard.
