IS READING A PRIORITY FOR THE BULGARIAN STATE? BALANCE 10 YEARS LATER

Abstract: The world is experiencing dramatic crises at the present time – diseases, wars, inflation, but also spiritual decline. The landmarks are so blurred that they are rather not visible. On the agenda in Bulgaria are problems such as national integrity, but also bullion and records. But the lights of quality, meaning and even national pride cannot and should not be ignored. These torches of hope – the international „Booker“ prize for the book „Time Shelter“ by Georgi Gospodinov translated by Angela Rodel – is the starting point for problematization in the present report. The achievement of Gospodinov/Rodel, in addition to filling us with joy and self-confidence, puts on the agenda the topic of reading and its importance for the formation of cultural and spiritual integrity of modern man. Parijkova has 76 about „reading“ and 7 Book compilations. On the occasion of an invitation to an interview on the National Radio on April 24, 2023, the idea was born to take stock of what changes or whether there have any in the last ten years since her publication „State Policy for Reading Stimulating in Bulgaria“. The report presents a comparative analysis of state documents and events. Bulgaria’s new initiatives regarding reading are described, evaluating positives and negatives. It is concluded that the policy to encourage reading at the state level is not effective as far as it exists. Still, the concern for increasing reading literacy is voluntarily taken up by non-governmental organizations to a much more than by the state.
