Abstract: Effective STEM education in early childhood, encouraging the development of interest, perseverance and competence in the area of STEM, is among the leading efforts needed to provide qualified professionals in these fields. Getting acquainted with STEM in the first years of primary education is vital so that children can develop an interest in STEM and eventually pursue a career in this area. The focus in building children’s STEM literacy is to understand how and when they apply knowledge and practices from different STEM disciplines. Applying knowledge enables children to develop an even deeper understanding of STEM concepts and processes and how they relate to each other. For pre-school children, this means that they can be introduced to the scientific method – a systematic and logical approach used to answer a question or solve a problem. By asking the right questions, we can help stimulate research in which children identify objects, make comparisons and predictions, test ideas and share discoveries, while observing their natural environment. In the process, children can also explore sizes, shapes, patterns and quantities. In this way, they can become acquainted with concepts from different disciplines in different contexts, all in a way that naturally engages them. Using strategies would help preschool teachers build a positive STEM identity in children.
