Abstract: The article examines the concept of “functional literacy” and pays attention to the overall personal development of young children and students. The article highlights the need for functional literacy as a set of qualities, skills and competencies that help kindergarten and primary school children to successfully cope with real life situations and successfully integrate into modern society. Emphasis is placed on the need for purposeful pedagogical activity, approach and methods, tailored to individual characteristics, through which functional literacy is formed and developed in children of preschool and primary school age. The article provides a theoretical overview of the essence, development and ways of forming functional literacy in young children and students through the main activity for them.
