Abstract: The educated and literate individual has significantly more chances for successful realization in society.The most important quality of the modern personality is its adaptability. An important characteristic of a successful individual, in addition to the amount of knowledge, are a set of skills that are applied in various life situations. The environment in which the child grows and develops is saturated with dynamism, which is determined by the development of technology and society. The analogy is leading in the formation of a number of skills. The basis for the acquisition of new knowledge and skills development is the literacy of the individual. The article provides a theoretical overview of modern educational technologies and their significance for the literacy of the modern individual. Functional literacy is considered in terms of content. A parallel is drawn and the interrelationships between functional literacy and the competence approach are sought.
