Abstract: The study examines the application of the local studies principle in the history education in the lower secondary stage of the students. In this way a deeper study of the characteristic objects, culture, lifestyle and mentality of the Bulgarians in a given settlement or region is carried out. Pedagogical practice shows that when studying national history, students can not build such strong ideas about the past and the present. That is why the education and educational tasks are subordinate to those set in the curriculum of the historical training. The studied regional history raises the interest in the common grounds and provides opportunities for a better understanding of historical and social phenomena. That is why the local studies principle is not only characteristic of Bulgarian-specific historical education. In the presented methodological variants, it is traced how by studying local (regional) history pupils better perceive, rationalize and analyze the studied historical periods from the curriculum of History and Civilisations (grades 5-7).
